Prof. Dr. Josef Settele and Prof. Dr. Franz Essl tops global science ranking

Once a year, the Web of Science Group identifies the world’s most influential scientists based on the frequency of cited publications in renowned sources. This year’s 6,849 selected scientists include Prof. Dr. Josef Settele (picture), Chairman of our Scientific Advisory Board, as well as Assoc. Prof. Mag. Dr. Franz Essl, member of our Scientific Advisory Board.

Prof. Dr. Settele is an agricultural biologist who heads the Department of Conservation Research at the UFZ and is a professor (apl.) at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). His research focuses on the conservation and evolutionary biology of insects, biodiversity and land use as well as interdisciplinary cooperation and project coordination in the field of biodiversity. He was one of three directors for the Global Assessment in the World Biodiversity Council IPBES. Since 2020, he has been a member of the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU).

Dr. Franz Essl is Associate Professor at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences. His research focuses on the effects of global change on species and habitats and he is a member of the management team of the Austrian Biodiversity Council.
