As a reaction to a resolution of the federal constitutional court in May 2021, the federal minister of environment Svenja Schulze has presented a draft for the renewal of the climate protection act which was passed in 2019. The draft of the federal government aims to rise the reduction targets: until 2030,  greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 65 percent compared to 1990 and by 88 percent until 2040. With regards to the 2030s, definite yearly reduction targets are stated. In 2045, Germany should reach greenhouse gas neutrality, i.e. a balance between greenhouse gas emissions and degradation.

After the 1st reading and debate in the Deutsche Bundestag on 10th of June 2021, the draft legislation will be further discussed in the responsible environmental committee.
